Common TUI Airways carry-on mistakes

  • Assuming a flight-only booking includes a hold bag the way a package holiday does. Flight-only includes hand luggage only.
  • Waiting until the airport to add checked luggage. A single 15 kg bag costs £60 to £80 at the airport depending on route, versus less when pre-booked online.
  • Packing hand luggage over 10 kg. Overweight or oversize hand luggage goes into the hold at the gate and a charge may apply.

What happens if your bag does not fit on TUI Airways

Hand luggage exceeding 55 x 40 x 20 cm or 10 kg is placed in the aircraft hold at the gate and a charge may apply. Pushchairs handed over at the gate need a label from check-in and come back on the luggage belt at arrival.

TUI Airways vs Jet2 carry-on

Jet2 and TUI Airways are the UK's two big leisure carriers and both include a 10 kg cabin bag plus an under-seat bag on every booking, but the sizes differ: Jet2 allows 56 x 45 x 25 cm against TUI's 55 x 40 x 20 cm, so a bag packed to Jet2's limit fails TUI's sizer on depth. TUI's package holidays bundle at least 20 kg of checked luggage, which Jet2 always sells separately, while on flight-only bookings both airlines charge for the hold bag. For hand-luggage-only city breaks Jet2's bigger allowance wins; for package holidays TUI's included 20 kg usually matters more.

Package holidays flying TUI Airways both ways include 20 kg of checked luggage per person, rising to 25 kg on TUI BLUE, Sensatori by TUI BLUE, Holiday Villages, TUI River Cruises, wedding packages, and Premium cabin bookings (under-2s get 10 kg). Flight-only bookings include no checked luggage; add it at booking or through Flight Extras, which is cheaper than paying at the airport. The allowance can be pooled across a booking as long as no single bag exceeds 25 kg. Excess luggage at the airport costs £15 per extra kg on short and mid-haul flights and £20 per kg on long-haul. Flight-only passengers with no pre-booked allowance pay £60 / €70 per 15 kg bag on short-haul, or £80 / €90 to Cape Verde, Egypt, Gambia, Senegal, and long-haul destinations, one bag max per customer. TUI publishes no maximum checked bag dimensions.
