Frequently asked questions

What are the busiest US airports?

The top five busiest US airports in 2024 by total passengers were Atlanta (ATL), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Denver (DEN), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), and Los Angeles (LAX). Our guides cover 112 airports (50 US airports and 62 international) with terminal layouts, connection times, and layover advice.

Which US airports are easiest to leave during a layover?

The easiest US airports to leave during a layover are DCA (Reagan National) and BOS (Boston Logan), both with direct subway service reaching downtown in 15-25 minutes. LAS (Las Vegas) is also very close to The Strip, and SLC (Salt Lake City) is only 7 miles from downtown.

Which US airports have the best layover amenities?

Atlanta (ATL) has Minute Suites with showers and sleep rooms, The Club ATL lounges, and a renowned art program. Detroit (DTW) McNamara Terminal has a famous light tunnel and mile-long airside walkway. SFO and LGA have fully rebuilt terminals with premium dining.

Which US airports are airside-connected between terminals?

ATL, DFW, DEN, LAX, CLT, IAH and BUR are airside-connected between terminals, among the 13 US airports we have a sourced answer for. At ORD, JFK, MIA, EWR, BOS and LGA, some terminal changes require exiting security and re-clearing it. We have no sourced answer yet for the other 37.

How early should I arrive at the airport?

Follow your airline's check-in and bag-drop deadlines. 44 airports publish their own arrival advice, and their pages show it; we print no arrival figure for the others. Security waits vary by time of day and checkpoint, so add buffer at busy times.
