Cape Liberty Cruise Port sits in Bayonne, NJ, across the harbor from Lower Manhattan. It is the New York metro area’s primary homeport for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises. The port is much easier to reach from Newark (EWR) than from JFK or LaGuardia, and this is the single most important planning decision for your transfer.

Which airport should you fly into?

Newark (EWR) is the right answer. It is about 9 miles (14 km) from Cape Liberty, a straight run down the NJ Turnpike to Exit 14A. JFK is much farther and requires crossing from Queens into New Jersey, often through the Holland or Lincoln Tunnel or over the Verrazzano and Bayonne Bridge. LaGuardia is slightly closer than JFK but still involves crossing into New Jersey through Manhattan traffic. If you have a choice, book EWR.

Transport options from EWR

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): The most common option. Pickup depends on your terminal. At Terminal A it is on the arrivals level, directly across the street. At Terminal B it is on the arrivals level, on the terminal frontage. At Terminal C, United’s hub, Uber and Lyft pick up on Floor 3 of the Terminal C Garage, not at the curb. Newark says pricing depends on your pickup location and the time of day, so check the app quote before you book.

Taxi: Taxi stands are curbside in each terminal’s arrivals area, and a uniformed dispatcher puts you in the next cab. At Terminal C the stand is on Level 1 near Door 6. Newark’s estimated fare list covers nearby cities such as Jersey City ($56) but not Bayonne, and tolls, a $1 charge per bag and other fees come on top, so ask the dispatcher for the Bayonne fare.

Pre-booked car service: Newark’s authorized van and shuttle companies serve New York City, Westchester, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, not Bayonne. For a pre-booked ride, get a quote from a car service, or check whether your cruise line sells a motor coach transfer.

Public transit + taxi: Royal Caribbean’s directions cover a train route from Manhattan: PATH to Jersey City or Hoboken, then the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to 34th Street in Bayonne. From there you still call a Bayonne taxi for the last stretch, since the port is about two miles east of the Light Rail line. With cruise luggage, a direct ride from EWR is far simpler.

Rental car: Cape Liberty offers on-site parking at $35 per day. For a 7-night cruise, that is $245. Oversized vehicles that take more than one space pay double ($70 per day). The parking garage has a 7’4” (2.2 m) height limit. No reservation is needed and parking is guaranteed.

Transport options from JFK (if you must)

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): Expect a long, toll-heavy ride. The route crosses into New Jersey, either through Manhattan or over the Verrazzano and Bayonne Bridge, and neither the airport nor the port publishes a fare or ride time for it. Check the app quote.

Pre-booked car service: A private car booked in advance gives you a fixed quote before you land, which matters more on a long, traffic-prone transfer like this one. Book it ahead.

The cruise terminal

Cape Liberty has a single terminal at 4 Port Terminal Boulevard. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises operate from here. Browse the ship database to compare specs and cabin sizes for ships sailing from Bayonne. The parking garage sits right next to the terminal, and vehicles taller than its 7’4” limit use the adjacent open lot. The port has Statue of Liberty views from the terminal and parking areas.

What to do if your flight is delayed

Call your cruise line immediately. Cape Liberty is close enough to EWR that even a 2-hour delay is usually recoverable. From JFK, delays are riskier due to the longer and less predictable drive. Keep your booking confirmation number on your phone.

Pro tips

1. Stay in Jersey City the night before. Jersey City sits just north of Bayonne, its hotels are usually cheaper than Manhattan’s, and a night there removes same-day flight risk. The Exchange Place PATH station area has several modern hotel options.
2. Avoid JFK if possible. The time and cost difference between EWR and JFK for this specific transfer is large enough to justify rebooking if your schedule allows.
3. Traffic timing matters. If arriving same-day, avoid the NJ Turnpike during the weekday morning rush. A late-morning arrival usually means lighter traffic.
4. Know your Terminal C pickup. If you land at Terminal C, Uber and Lyft load on Floor 3 of the Terminal C Garage. Head there after baggage claim instead of waiting at the curb.
