Getting from IAH or HOU Airport to Port of Galveston: The Complete 2026 Guide
How to get from Houston airports (IAH and Hobby) to the Galveston cruise port in 2026. Which airport to fly into, transport options, costs, and the I-45 drive you need to plan for.
Galveston is the Gulf Coast’s busiest cruise port, and getting there means driving south from Houston. There is no way around the I-45 drive: it is 45 miles from Hobby (HOU) and about 70 miles from Intercontinental (IAH). This is one of the longer airport-to-port transfers in the US, so which Houston airport you fly into matters more here than at most cruise destinations. If this is your first sailing, our first-time cruise tips will help you prepare.
If you are flying in for a cruise, here is everything you need to know about getting from Houston to the Port of Galveston.
Which Houston airport should you fly into?
Houston Hobby (HOU) is the better choice. It is approximately 45 miles from the Port of Galveston, roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour on I-45 South. Hobby is closer, the drive is more direct, and the airport itself is smaller and easier to navigate than IAH.
George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is approximately 70 miles from Galveston, a drive of 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 45 minutes. IAH is the United hub and has more international connections, but the extra 25 miles and 30 to 45 minutes of drive time add up, especially on embarkation day. If you are connecting from an international flight, IAH may be your only option.
The difference is real. From Hobby, a rideshare to Galveston costs roughly $50 to $70. From IAH, expect $75 to $110. A shared shuttle from Hobby runs $30 to $40 per person; from IAH, $40 to $55.
Transport options
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): Available from both airports. From HOU, expect $50 to $70 and 45 to 60 minutes. From IAH, expect $75 to $110 and 75 to 105 minutes. Surge pricing on embarkation mornings can push fares higher.
Pre-booked shuttle: The most common option for Galveston transfers. Galveston Limousine, Island Breeze Shuttle, and other services run between both Houston airports and the cruise port. Shared shuttles cost $30 to $50 per person from HOU, $40 to $55 from IAH. Pre-booking is required. Shuttles coordinate pickup times around flight arrivals.
Private car service: Pre-booked sedans or SUVs run $100 to $150 from HOU, $130 to $200 from IAH. Worth considering for families or groups who can split the cost.
Rental car: If you are driving to the port, the Port of Galveston offers reservation-based parking with variable pricing. Third-party lots near the port start at $8 to $12 per day. For a 7-night cruise, port parking is in the $80 to $140 range depending on the lot. Reserve in advance, especially during peak season.
Cruise line motor coach: Some cruise lines sell motor coach transfers from both Houston airports. Check your cruise line’s transfer page at booking. These are typically reliable but less flexible on timing.
The I-45 drive
Almost the entire drive from Houston to Galveston is on I-45 South. The highway is straightforward with no complicated interchanges. The Galveston Causeway is the final stretch, a bridge over Galveston Bay that connects the island to the mainland. Saturday mornings during cruise season bring heavier traffic near the causeway. Allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes on peak embarkation days.
Port of Galveston terminals
The Port of Galveston operates 4 cruise terminals. Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, MSC, and Princess all sail from here. Browse the ship database to compare specs and cabin sizes across fleets. Your cruise line’s terminal will be listed on your boarding documents. The terminals are along the same stretch of waterfront, and the drive between them is short.
What to do if your flight is delayed
Call your cruise line immediately. The long transfer from Houston to Galveston means delays are harder to absorb than at ports like PortMiami or Port Everglades. If your flight lands after noon, the math gets tight. This is the strongest argument for flying into Hobby (saving 30+ minutes) and arriving the day before.
Pro tips
- Fly in the day before. With a 45-to-70-mile transfer, same-day arrival is riskier than at East Coast ports. Stay near the port on Galveston Island or near Hobby airport and drive down in the morning.
- Book the shuttle in advance. Unlike Florida ports where rideshare is cheap and fast, Galveston transfers are long enough that a pre-booked shuttle with guaranteed pricing is often better value than surge-priced rideshare on embarkation morning.
- Use the Galveston Causeway as your landmark. Once you cross the causeway, the port is a few minutes ahead. If you see the Gulf, you are close.
- Pack a change of clothes in your carry-on. The long transfer means less buffer time if checked bags are delayed.
- Galveston Island is worth a night. The Strand Historic District has restaurants, shops, and a beach town atmosphere that makes a pre-cruise overnight more enjoyable than an airport hotel.
