The drive from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Port Canaveral takes about 45 minutes, east on SR 528, the Beachline Expressway. The airport calls it a 42-mile route. This is one of the longer airport-to-cruise-port transfers in the US, so planning your transport in advance matters more here than at closer ports like FLL or MIA.

Transport options

Cruise transfer shuttle: Usually the best value for solo travelers or couples, since shuttles charge per person. Orlando International lists five on-site cruise transfer companies: Busy Traveler Transportation, Cocoa Beach Shuttle, Go Port, Mears Destination Services and Sunward Tours. The airport publishes no fares for them, so book directly and confirm the price. Shuttle vans load on the Ground Transportation Curb (Level 1) of each terminal.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): Uber and Lyft pick up at the Arrivals Curb (Level 2) of Terminals A and B, and at the Arrivals Curb (Level 6) of Terminal C. The airport publishes no rideshare fare, so check the app before you commit. Groups who split one car often come out ahead of per-person shuttle fares.

Taxi: Taxis wait on the Ground Transportation Curb (Level 1) at Terminals A and B and on the Arrivals Curb (Level 6) at Terminal C. Orlando International’s approximate rate table lists $115 to Port Canaveral. Taxis are metered (flat rates are not allowed), so treat that as a guide, but the fare is per trip and a cab can carry up to 9 passengers.

Cruise line transfer: Some cruise lines run their own transfers on this route, so check your line’s pre-cruise planning page. The advantage is that if your flight is delayed, the cruise line already knows and can coordinate.

Rental car: If you are combining a theme park visit with your cruise, driving makes sense. The route is straightforward: SR 528 East from MCO directly to Port Canaveral. Port Canaveral charges $20 per day plus tax for cruise parking. The rate counts both the day you arrive and the day you return, so a 7-night cruise is eight days, about $160 plus tax. No reservation is needed.

Private car service: A pre-arranged sedan or SUV is the premium option for families with car seats or travelers with a lot of luggage. Orlando International keeps a Vehicles for Hire list of companies permitted to pick up passengers with pre-arranged rides; book directly for the price.

Port Canaveral terminals

Port Canaveral has 7 cruise terminals. Your embarkation terminal is assigned by cruise line and ship, and it will be listed on your boarding documents. Terminal assignments can change, so confirm yours within the week before sailing.

What to do if your flight is delayed

The 45-minute drive distance makes MCO-to-Port-Canaveral transfers more sensitive to flight delays than shorter routes. If your flight is delayed:

1. Call your cruise line’s emergency embarkation number immediately.
2. If you booked a cruise line motor coach, they will adjust automatically. If you booked an independent shuttle, call the shuttle company too.
3. If your delay is severe, ask about meeting the ship at the first port of call (typically Nassau or CocoCay for Bahamas itineraries).

Pro tips

1. Fly in the day before. This is especially important for Port Canaveral because of the longer transfer distance. Stay near MCO or in the Cocoa Beach area, then drive to the port fresh in the morning.
2. Sort out tolls before you drive. SR 528 is a toll road and the Central Florida Expressway Authority no longer takes cash. E-PASS customers save up to 50% over Pay By Plate, so if you are in a rental car, check its toll program before you go.
3. Combine with Disney or Universal. Many families spend 3 to 4 days at the parks, then drive to Port Canaveral for the cruise. This is one of the most popular vacation combos in the US.
4. Pack a cooler for the drive. Unlike a short hop from FLL, the 45-minute drive can leave kids (and adults) hungry. Bring snacks.
5. Stick to your boarding time. Port Canaveral asks cruise guests to follow their assigned boarding times, and its parking opens at 10 AM for embarkation, so there is no gain in arriving hours early.
