The Port of New Orleans has two cruise terminals close together in the Warehouse District: the Erato Street Cruise Terminal, used by Carnival, and the Julia Street Cruise Terminal, used by Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. Transport options

Taxi: The simplest option. Taxis load in a dedicated zone on the arrivals curb outside Level 1 Baggage Claim Door 7. The airport’s flat rate is $36 to the Central Business District or French Quarter (west of Elysian Fields) for up to two passengers, or $15 per passenger for three or more. The city’s rate table extends it to the Elysian Fields boundary, which lies past the cruise terminals, so it covers your ride. Taxis must accept credit cards.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): Pickups are on the middle curb outside Level 1 Baggage Claim. Lyft riders exit Doors 7 to 9 and Uber riders exit Doors 9 to 11, then cross the walkway and join the queue. Non-UberX rides meet the driver at Zone 3 on the same curb. MSY publishes no rideshare fare, so compare the app quote with the $36 taxi.

Pre-booked shuttle: MSY’s own shuttles serve only nearby hotels, off-airport parking and the rental car center, and no official source publishes a cruise shuttle price. If you want a shared or private transfer, get a quote when you book, or check whether your cruise line sells a motor coach transfer.

Public transit: The RTA Airport Express (202) bus costs $1.25 and runs into downtown New Orleans, stopping at Elk Place and the Union Passenger Terminal. It boards outside Level 1 Baggage Claim Door 2. It does not reach the cruise terminals, so you still need a taxi or rideshare for the last leg.

Rental car: If you are exploring Louisiana before or after your cruise, driving is straightforward via I-10 East. The port sells cruise parking as one price for the length of your sailing: $120 for 4 days, $135 for 5 days, and $180 for 7 days without a reservation, plus a $1 per day convenience fee if you reserve. Carnival guests park at the Erato Street garage; Norwegian and Royal Caribbean guests park at the 100 Poydras Garage and ride a shuttle to the Julia Street terminal. The cruise terminals

The Port of New Orleans operates two cruise terminals on the Mississippi River in the Warehouse District: the Erato Street Cruise Terminal (Carnival) and the Julia Street Cruise Terminal (Norwegian, Royal Caribbean). The port puts both on the riverfront streetcar line, 5 minutes from the French Quarter, and near the National WWII Museum and Magazine Street. What to do if your flight is delayed

Call your cruise line’s emergency embarkation number immediately. All three lines that sail from New Orleans have procedures for late-arriving passengers. Check your boarding documents for the latest check-in time, since it varies by line and sailing.

The transfer from MSY is a single run down I-10, so moderate flight delays are usually recoverable, especially if you were on a morning flight. If a delay pushes your landing into the afternoon, call your cruise line before you leave the airport.

Pro tips

1. Spend a night in the French Quarter. New Orleans is one of the few cruise ports where the pre-cruise city experience rivals the cruise itself. The port puts both terminals 5 minutes from the French Quarter, so you can explore Bourbon Street, eat beignets at Cafe Du Monde, and get to the port quickly in the morning.
2. Walk to the port from downtown hotels. If you stay in the Warehouse District, the cruise terminals are close by. Just make sure you can handle your luggage on foot.
3. Avoid I-10 during rush hour. Weekday morning traffic through Metairie and into downtown can be heavy. Weekend embarkation days are typically lighter.
4. Pack for humidity. Even the short walk from taxi to terminal can leave you damp in New Orleans’ subtropical climate. Wear breathable clothes on embarkation day.
5. The WWII Museum is worth a pre-cruise visit. It is close to both downtown cruise terminals and consistently rated as one of the best museums in the country.
