Holland America Line dress code

Daytime attire is casual, and shirts or cover-ups and footwear are required indoors at all times. Most evenings are smart casual; table service restaurants do not permit shorts, pool or beachwear, distressed jeans, or men's tank tops. Guests bring their own Dressy Nights attire, as the line does not provide formal wear. The recommendation for each evening is listed in the Daily Program and the Navigator app.

Formal night frequency

Holland America designates Dressy Nights by voyage length: under 4 days none; 4-6 days one; 7-13 days two; 14-20 days three; 21-28 days four; 29-38 days five; 39-48 days six, continuing up to eleven for 89-98 day voyages. Grand World Voyages vary by length. Most other evenings are smart casual. On a typical 7-day cruise Dressy Nights usually fall on the first full day and the second-to-last evening. They are never scheduled on embarkation day or the final night, and ship staff may adjust their placement. The line uses the term Dressy rather than Formal, and black tie or tuxedos have never been required.

Holland America Line alcohol policy

You may bring wine and champagne only, each bottle 750 ml or less. Limits apply, and Holland America may refuse quantities it deems excessive. Alcohol bought in the gift shop or in ports is surrendered for safekeeping and delivered to your stateroom shortly before disembarkation.

Holland America Line gratuities

Holland America charges a daily Crew Appreciation that posts to your onboard account: $18.00 per guest per day for non-suite staterooms and $20.00 for suites. A separate 20% service charge applies to beverage purchases, bar retail items, specialty restaurant cover charges, and a la carte menu items, and an 18% charge applies to spa and salon services.

Holland America Line smoking policy

Smoking is allowed only in posted designated areas that vary by ship, including an outdoor area at the Sea View Bar on each ship Holland America lists. Cigars and pipes are banned indoors and permitted only on outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed.

Holland America Line baggage allowance

For itineraries that include a land-based component, Holland America states each guest may bring two pieces of checked luggage and one overnight or light flight bag, which should stay in the guest's possession at all times. The line does not publish a per-bag weight limit of its own; its baggage page raises 50 lb only as an airline caveat ("Airlines may charge excess baggage fees or fees for bags over 50 pounds"). Luggage should carry a durable personal ID tag, and printable Holland America luggage tags are offered during Online Check-In. If luggage is lost, delayed, or damaged in the line's care, liability is limited to US$250 per bag, per guest.

Three content-based tiers: Surf covers web, email, news, and messaging apps with no audio or video features; Premium at $26 per day adds audio and basic video messaging but not video streaming; Stream at $38 per day adds Netflix, Disney+, and other streaming plus Wi-Fi calling and video messaging.
