Holland America Line dress code

Holland America uses a Smart Casual baseline for most evenings, which means collared shirts, blouses, dresses, or dressy separates. On Gala Nights, the line requests tuxedos, dinner jackets, or dark suits for men, and evening gowns or cocktail dresses for women. The Lido Market buffet and in-room dining have no dress requirements on any evening.

Formal night frequency

Holland America designates Gala Nights by sailing length: 7-night cruises include one Gala Night; cruises of 8-13 nights include two; cruises of 14-20 nights include three. Most other evenings are Smart Casual. The Lido Market buffet remains dress-code-free on all evenings including Gala Nights.

Holland America Line alcohol policy

Wine and champagne only, at embarkation, each bottle 750 ml or less. Holland America does not publish a fixed per-guest bottle count and may refuse quantities it deems excessive. Beer and spirits are not permitted. Any alcohol other than wine or champagne, whether brought at embarkation or bought in a port, is held for safekeeping and returned on the last day of the voyage.

Holland America Line gratuities

Holland America charges a daily Crew Appreciation that posts to your onboard account: $18.00 per guest per day for non-suite staterooms and $20.00 for suites, following a June 2026 increase from $17 and $19. The charge is added automatically each day. A separate 18% service charge applies to beverages and is already built into beverage package prices.

Smoking is allowed only in posted designated areas that vary by ship, including an outdoor area at the Sea View Bar on every ship. Cigars and pipes are banned indoors and permitted only on outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed.
